Michael Marcelle is a Brooklyn based photographer who recently completed his MFA at Yale University. His ongoing series “Kokomo” is a documentation of his immediate family and his hometown.
Incorporating constructed dioramas, digital manipulation, appropriated family photographs and traditional photography, the work forgoes a diaristic approach to the subject matter, and instead builds an alternate reality over my biography, abstracting the specifics of a personal narrative into an elusive, alien world.
The decidedly stylized approach to explore his personal life heightens Marcelle’s universe into a delectable visual experience. Colourful, at moments disturbing, Marcelle manage to inject a sense of pathos into an aesthetic that could easily become insincere.
