Julia Forrest is a Brooklyn-based artist with a home-made darkroom in her apartment. Forrest creates arresting, black and white photographs of women from another world. They may be dressed like young, delicate, girls, but their gestures demonstrate great strength. Forrest’s vignettes touch upon themes of time, death, rebirth and destiny, as she constructs her scenes in camera. Her characters are not afraid of taking charge. They are oracles, they are fates. They control what happens to themselves and the viewer.
“The women use their mirror to re-frame what I have framed and capture in their mirror like a camera captures in the lens.” – Julia Forrest
