David Macias and Spain's young and unemployed

David Macias is a Spanish-born, UK-based photographer, interested in the mechanics of socioeconomic power and inequality, especially the every day representations of it. In his series Banishment, Macias photographs the giant percentage (nearly 50%) of young, unemployed Spaniards. With reasons pointing to an unstable economy, the unemployment rate has pushed those affected to leave Spain for surrounding countries in hopes of finding work. Culture shock quickly lets in and the difficulty communicating in different languages, and settling for unskilled, low-paid jobs, takes hold. The project shines light on the sobering reality of Spain’s youth and the anxiety of needing to leave the life one has made in order to survive.
