The images featured above come from two different series from Min Kim Park: “Women Photography” and “Zummarella.” The two projects are executed using different, specific, visual tropes that ultimately investigate the same thematic thread. Through her body of work, Park is interested in the many ways that culture transform the experience of being a woman, either socially or physically.
The women in Park’s images twist and turn as the out of the world studio environments attempt to throw them out of balance. Park utilizes vibrant colours and humorous aesthetics to emphasize the comic book like atmosphere within her photographs.
Born in South Korea, Min Kim Park explores issues surrounding gender, ethnicity and identity using performance, video, photography, sound and video installation. Her work draws much from her experience as a journalist in Chicago for the Korea News Daily and Korean American Broadcasting Co.
