Hyounsang Yoo was born in Seoul, Korea.
Yoo is an interdisciplinary artist who currently lives and works in Chicago, IL. His works explore relationships between history and ideas of production of reality as related to images and mass media through photography.
“Smoke and Mirrors” is a compilation of works that Yoo has been working on in the last couple of years.
Yoo’s work, while often taking its form as a combination of performance, still and moving images – is about photography. Colourful and playful, the images in “Smoke and Mirrors” play out like beats to a song as slight variations of gestures and colours are peppered through Yoo’s seemingly looping images. Through a series of repeating scenarios, Yoo builds environments that point out the ways that photography distorts the things it captures.
