5×5: “Internet Conspiracy Theories” by Marisa Gertz

Marisa Gertz is a photographer and gif-smith, one third of Gifriends.

5×5 features five photographs from five photographers selected by a guest editor.

There’s this thing that happens when people on the internet gather to try to solve a mystery, real or invented — like finding the Boston bomber using surveillance video or trying to prove that a beauty blogger was being held prisoner by examining reflections in her eyes in her videos. All these little details get magnified and dissected, sometimes ridiculously. I think it’s a human thing (and a photography thing too), to try and give everything significance, to the point where we start inventing meaning where there might not be any. These photos reminded me of that desire for a mystery, a puzzle to solve.
